Melbourne and Coffee and Excitement

Well it seems my trip home will be taken up with visiting the best of what Melbourne has to offer. Melbourne has had an incredible year for coffee happenings. Even since my last trip home in Feb, another flux of cafes and roasters have sprung up all over town. The must-do list is as follows, and in no particular order...

Seven Seeds - To have the uber catch up with Brig and Mark
St. Ali - Get to see the best smile in the business from Toshi
Sensory Lab - Chance meeting with Megan?
Brother Baba Budan - Add a chair to the ceiling.
Proud Mary - Find out why they need 6 groups.
Outpost - Get Sal to buy me lunch
Market Lane - Rematch of Connect 4 with Jason
Dead Man Espresso - See Nashy for the first time since Il fornaio days
Auction Rooms - Have breakfast next door at Styles' sisters...

Are there any others i'm missing? I need to know asap - would hate to miss anyone... to flog the soon to be English translated Wendelbook.

Does Melbourne have room for all of these places? Who is doing the most exciting stuff? And beyond anything else is the roasting and sourcing of their coffees up to scratch? Is the calibre in Melbourne catching up to Norway?

We'll soon see... drooool.

It's also a bugger i can't get up to see Em, Rus and Paul in Syders. They'll have to wait for the next scheduled game of Anal Bowling.

Just remember...

Oslo is cold

Time to sport the walkabout sleeping bag jacket from ACNE. And lay down on the road where cars are meant to be and where McD's drinks leave drink marks. I was kept warm from the beers consumed that evening.

Kaffe med Tim Wendelboe

Last night the Wendelcrew and friends celebrated yet another achievement from Mr. Wendelboe, this time a book. Over here in Norway, Tim has spotted a little gap between the ever growing home coffee enthusiasts and the specialty coffee professionals. While the coffee professionals delve deeper and deeper into the inner workings of all things coffee and continue to chase that perfect cup, the home enthusiast and regular Joe, who incidentally is now looking at their regular Joe a little more seriously, feel out of their league and perhaps intimidated by the prospect of achieving more than something to wake up to.

The trend in the wine world and people like Matt Skinner have over the past 10 years helped to encourage people to explore the diversity of wine varietals, and to take some pride in food and wine matching and a better appreciation for what wine can be. The same, hopefully, can be said about coffee nowadays. People are investing more time and money in sourcing a better experience, and are slowing moving beyond the 2nd wave and into the 3rd wave of coffee - ditching their milk and exploring the intricacies of single origin coffee.

'Kaffe med Tim Wendelboe' is designed to help the home user understand all things coffee and to improve on brewing techniques used at home. I am still surprised at how many people ask how to use a French press, or their realisation that like wine; varietals, terroir, origin and processing methods effect the end result hugely. Hopefully, the book will be translated into English soon, so that more people will read it and help to promote better coffee practices.

And no, there isn't a chapter on Nespresso...

Something to look forward to...

Mum carving up the slopes in '81...

Until then, we've got the 2 options of those really crisp, sunshine filled days or miserable wet and cold days. The winter jacket is out (thank you Bruuns Bazaar) and the gloves for cycling are also close at hand...
